The water supply (copper pipe) to 5 St Andrews Cottages is
accidentally broken so the cut end is hammered flat to seal it pending a
repair. (South West Water have to be called out.) Water can be seen
spraying from the loose screw joint with the high-pressure 3" diameter
(approx.) cast-iron water main below. Copper pipe stopped being used for
water supply purposes in about the 1950s. 27/2/06 |

On the opposite side of the trench at this point is old
brickwork and pipework associated with and earlier (now disused and 'dry')
water main system. The present cast-iron main (water still spraying from
the leaking joint with the copper) runs across the centre of the trench. 27/2/06 |

A closer view of the disused water system. A couple of old
large brass taps are visible, everything simply buried beneath the road. 27/2/06 |

The new trench has been extended further northwards and
the cast-iron water main is now safely at the edge of the trench. The
copper connection to 4 St Andrews Cottages has been exposed. 28/2/06 |
