Remember the old brick culvert on the previous page? That
was here. It has been removed, along with about 3 feet of solid rock
beneath it, and the western stream contents are now flowing through the
smaller black twin-wall pipe on into the new system. 8/2/06 |

But turn round and face towards Preston Farm and you may
be able to see in this picture that FIVE pipes are visible, obstructing
the path of the workmen. Beneath the orange digger bucket is the main
sewer, beside the bucket the black cast-iron water main, above that two
generations of BT conduit, and behind the digger arm a smaller BT feed
conduit. Add to that the large BT manhole at the top of the picture, and
this situation requires a great deal of manual digging - and head
scratching! This necessitated a site meeting involving the DCC and SDHC
engineers, SWH project manager and the site team. Outcome awaited! 8/2/06 |

At the opposite end of the works, the new bridge parapet
is almost complete and a big stretch of finished tarmac had been laid
beyond, ready for re-opening this section of the road as far as the
junction reasonably soon. 8/2/06

The decision was made: The BT box was blocking the route
for the new 600ml pipe and has to go, but it is made of extremely hard,
steel-reinforced concrete. With cable-carrying conduit all around it's not
a job for the mechanical digger but... 9/2/06
