The following day Pete has a new (blue) water pipe and
water meter. One length of the 600ml pipe is lowered into position. 7/2/06 |

Just beyond the far end of that pipe length an old brick culvert covered with large flat stones crossed the road beneath
the
surface. The bricks, possibly dating from about the 1940s, were painted
inside with pitch to prevent attack from the acidic water. This culvert
carried the water from the stream entering the west of the village. 7/2/06 |

In the foreground the shuttering has been removed from
outside of the junction box cover. A workman still has to crawl inside
this through the 600ml pipe to remove more shuttering and props from
inside later in the week. In The Old Forge garden the pre-stressed pieces
forming the roof of the culvert have been painted with a black primer

...the laying of rolls of a special root-proof membrane,
all in position in this picture. Tree roots could otherwise have
penetrated between the culvert roof sections and conceivably have caused
obstructions within the culvert over a long period of time. The Old
Forge's 'soil' pipe has been encased in concrete for protection. 8/2/06 |
