Aggregate fill has been compacted on top of concrete which
embeds the 600ml twin-wall pipe and now a 6" pipe crossing the trench must
be repaired. Its function is not known, is possibly disused, but must be
repaired 'just in case'. 2/3/06 |

Just along the open trench the blue water supply to No.4
St Andrews Cottages has a sand jacket before being covered with aggregate.
At bottom right a new (grey plastic) conduit has to be put in place
through which BT will run their cables, currently suspended in mid-air.
Last night was very cold and the blue water pipe to No.5 St Andrews
Cottages was frozen up this morning before it had been covered. 2/3/06 |

The section of cast-iron water main which has just been
replaced, about 3" internal diameter. Much of the water system of this
type around Harberton has been 'lined' in recent times. The pipes are
cleaned internally section by section and a plastic lining sprayed on, all
by little devices travelling along inside the pipe. Evidence of corrosion
remaining on the inside of the pipe after cleaning can be seen at the
bottom of the picture where the plastic surface is uneven. 2/3/06 |
