Stonemason Jason Harwood rebuilds the wall in front of
St Clements Terrace, none too soon really as the old wall was suffering
badly from the ravages of time and ivy. |
|
Good progress, using a mixture of old and "new" stone. New
weep holes have been built into the base of the wall. 29/3/06 |

At the same time the regular team are doing one of the
last jobs: digging out the stream bed in preparation for placing gabion
baskets to provide stable access across the stream into the field from the
gateway. Gabions are wire mesh baskets constructed on-site and filled with
stone. 28/3/06 |

The gabions are already in place here (the wire mesh is
just visible beneath the water surface at lower right of the picture).
They are large flattish structures, filled with 4-inch stone. Gabions were
used during the Parish Hall construction project in 1996 where they form
the retaining mechanism for the vehicle entrance level behind the rear end
of the Hall. 29/3/06 |

Another view of the finished area behind The Old Forge.
Beneath the new wall are the two stream outlets, the one on the right is
the old stream which still runs beneath the house and the other is the new
culvert, now fully operational. As the final finishing touch here, grass
seed has been sown on the expanses of bare soil. 29/3/06 |
